Medicare is a national health insurance program for Americans over the age of 65 or under the age of 65 with qualified disabilities. Medicare consists of four “Parts” — A, B, C and D.

Medicare Part A is hospital insurance. It helps pay for inpatient care in a hospital or limited time at a skilled nursing facility following a hospital stay. Part A also pays for some home health care and hospice care.
Medicare Part B is medical insurance. It helps pay for services for doctor’s services, outpatient care, home health care, some medical equipment not covered by Part A and various preventive services.
Medicare Part C and Part D are Medicare Supplement Plans run by private insurance companies that follow rules set by Medicare.
Medicare Part C is Private Medicare Advantage. It includes all the benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B — plus, prescription drug coverage and additional benefits such as vision, hearing, and dental — all bundled together in one plan. While some Medicare Advantage plans feature zero or low premiums, nearly all of these plans include large co-payments at the time of service.
Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage.
